New website help

Hello, please can you help? I plan to set up a website but am quite bewildered with all the hosts on offer... are there any hosts you would recommend? I plan to have adverts, a forum, links to other websites etc. Is it better for me to write/design my own site, buy a domain name then pay an annual fee for hosting?

I highly recommend Heart Internet. You can buy a domain name from them and also host it with them.
