Password Protect a directory or database

I am designing a web page for business, i have all the pages built.....but now i need to create a database or directory of information that iw ill be selling and then password protect it.......i am told that i do this with the web host....i have not published yet........after that i need to set up credit card payment so my customers can buy my product.......please advise
