How to set to Passive ftp Mode

I am new to website design and I have managed to make and published a few sites over the last year or so all using NOF10.
I am having problems trying to get a connection with my ftp account for my latest site and domain name
My hosting company assure me everything is working at their end. They have suggested
"try using PASSIVE mode in your FTP?
I haven't come across this before when connecting with my other ftp accounts. I have used NOF10 ftp facility and Filezilla to try to connect and I can't see anything referring to "PASSIVE mode". Could anyone point me in the right direction?
