"automatic renew" how reliable is it

Having been with my UK based domain name registration company for 3 years and now hold about 20 different domains names, I have just discovered that one of my key domain names has expired.
The "automatic renew" option was chosen as with all my other domain names but on this occasion the .com domain name simply was not renewed.
I don't know the legal position here?
The situation caused me a lot of problems with one of my clients and I am wondering if I could legally claim against the company.
