Hi how can you lose the operating system on a windows 7 laptop I think the only way you can lose it is by having a virus on the laptop am I right.

No, not just a 'virus'. There are lots of other reasons the BIOS settup can't find an Operating System to boot into. For example if the Hard drive was dead, broken kaput, developed bad sectors or you had physically removed it.
