Control Panel. Power options. Click on Choose what the power buttons do.

When I press the power button. Then choose shut down on the dropdown bar.

Save Changes.

Just realised that I am on my W/7 computer so it may be different on W/8.

Thanks Jock, I have tried what you suggest, and in Control Panel the setting is already set for 'Shutdown'. So unfortunately I am no further forward.

Cracked it! I have just been in Control Panel, Power Options, etc., again. And have noticed that the "Fast Start-up" option has been ticked! I have un-ticked this, and my PC now shuts down with no problem.
