Using VLC Media or Windows Media Players

When I had XP and wanted to watch something I normally used media player or VLC media player.I now have windows 7 and cannot find open with which is what I used to do click on open with and choose the program I wanted to use.I have a short video on my hard drive and want to watch it what do I need to do it is in avi format

Hi Woolwell have just right clicked on the folder but there is no option to open with VLC or a option to browse to find a suitable program

Open VLC and then in VLC at top left click on 'Media' and 'Open File' and browse to it in the popup window that opens.
