Using a 'used' wireless dongle

having aquired a small desktop PC [ An old HP-VISTA] ti be a media centre through the TV- I now want it on line.

It needs wireless dongle to do this, so have got a selection from friends.

When each is plugged in and settup is attemped each has come up with the previous owners router detail.

These are edited out and my router and password are entered. but each comes up as 'connected' but fails the verification process.

So the question is are these 'used' dongles now previous owner specific, and will I now need a 'virgin' item?

You don't need a virgin item as most dongles should work. Not sure about a 2nd hand one mind you but I see no reason why it should not work.

Have you tried running the computer troubleshooter. Can the actual connection be seen.
