Reading PDF files in windows 8

I have a PC running windows 7 and a laptop with windows 8 connected by ethernet. If I try to open a pdf file from the laptop desktop, the file opens with the Reader App. If I try to open the same file from the Start Screen it will not open evn though the network location of the file is found correctly. The same thing happens when I installed Adobe Touch as an alternative. Has anyone encountered a similar problem and found a solution.
