change .com domain name registration

i have 2 .com and 2.uk domain names i registered for friend years ago. i have transferred them to his account at the same isp i use. but on the whois i am still the registrant. do i have to go thru registrar or can he just change info in his control panel. i have asked isp but they have not replied yet. and want quick resolution.
