disk read error- is it battery

when booted this machine gives 'disk readerror' despite the BIOS being reset each time boot from HDD it revertsto floppy first bott - and it has no floppy

Isc this amanifestation of a failing BIOS battery?

You say it reverts to floppy. I assume you're exiting and saving with F10? I can't see it being the CMOS battery if the main battery is installed, but, as always, I may be wrong!

The machine in questionis one of those old fahioned desk tops The only batteyr is the BIOS and yes I am familiar with BIOS routines

Sorry - assumed laptop for some reason. I believe the same applies to a PC if the mains is left connected. Still, 5 min job to change the battery in a PC, so worth a try.
