is my laptop compatable for external hard drive

hi there i was wondering if you can help me ive just aquired a medion laptop which i would like to dj off my problem is that i have a small hard drive so i need to get a larger one ive tried an external hard drive but it does'nt reconise it, i was told that my laptop is usb 1.0 and the external hard drive is 3.0 so is there anything i can do to make it work thanks mike

Make (medion) and model of laptop?

USB3 is backward compatible with USB2 andit would have to be really old to be USb1 only

Look in device manager for an Enhanced driver under USB

Have you formatted the external drive?

USB3 HD should work as it is usually backwardly compatible. The only fact is that the speed will only be at USB1. Also a USB3 cable will not work; use a USB1 or USB2 cable.
