XP shut down problem

Hi, I seem to be having trouble shutting XP down. I've got a duel boot system with 7 Ultimate on the other drive which is working fine but just lately if I use XP it doesn't seem to want to shut down. I click shut down but the final window with cancel, shutdown and restart doen't appear. If I reboot to XP I can then shut it down normally unless I use it for any length of time. Any clues out there?
