I have had windows 7 for 6months with validation ok, but today it has failed to validate - saying that the key is invalid. Can you help please?

More details are needed before suitable advice can be offered. Was a reason given with the message that it was 'invalid'?

Is your W7:

OEM pre-installed and activated on pc with a sticker on the laptop/pc case

OEM bought separately and installed by yourself with the key provided

Retail

Student

Acquired by other means and not known if product key has been used before.

Product key bought from Internet sales site selling them 'cheap' and W7 iso file downloaded from a link.

Have you changed any of the Hardware parts inside your pc?

Information says product key used to activate windows in your pc is already in use on another or has been blocked by MS. The laptop is an IBM T60 bought used (so already installed) but has worked fine till now. Is this enough info?

I think that the T60 came with XP pro and not W7

Is there a sticker underneath with the COA and a product key on? And what operating system does it say on the sticker?

Is where you bought it from still in business and selling pcs?

It's possible that the validation failure is a mistake and can be sorted out.

Probably best to contact MS, if you ring them don't go through the menu just stay quiet and don't press any buttons - I'm told you will then get a human to talk to.

The sticker does say XPpro but it came with Windows 7 installed. I am trying to contact the business I bought it off which is still trading but awaiting a response.

slightly off topic but what are you actually doing to cause windows to not validate your key?

Ive never been asked to validate my windows 7?

You could download to your laptop and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. download and start the Utility. When the utility completes its run, click the "Copy" button and then paste it into Notepad.

You will then have all the info you need for yourself about your W7 op sys except the full product key - you would have to use a separate keyfinder for that like the free SIW or MagicalJellyBean keyfinder.

For an example (someone else's report) read 4th post down on social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindows7/thread/
