Laptop says no battery detected

I hadn't used my laptop (Asus X501U) for some months. The laptop was purchased last September and hasn't been much used.

When I used it, connected to mains, yesterday an icon indicated 'no battery detected'. I have left it plugged in (turned off) overnight and it still says the same. It isn't turning on when not plugged in.

What has happened and what should I do?

Thanks very much, Laurence

Unplug it from the mains > Take the battery out > Use a pencil to rub/clean the Contacts ~ Both those of the Battery and the Lappy > Put the battery back in and try again.

The "I hadn't used" suggests oxidation on the contacts
