Audio recording more than a CD capacity

I record meetings on a Sony Digital recorder and, after judicious editing, burn the audio onto CD's. Sometimes the recording is too long to fit a CD. I know that there is the technology to record hours of programmes onto a DVD but is there anything equivalent for audio to CD? For example, I have a recording that is just over 2 hours long. The resulting compressed CD needs to be playable on a home CD player.

Instead of creating an Audio CD, can you put the sound on to the disk as an MP3 file, which most home CD players (unless very old) should be able to play.

I have put the equivalent of 3 audio CDs on to a single CD-R using MP3 files.

May be best to convert to MP3 if player supports it

Sometimes, stereo recordings can be converted into mono output [with little loss in sound quality], which take up less disk space.

... have you tried higher capacity blank CD-R media?
