How to write-disable a pendrive

I want to protect my pendrive from any virus if I connect it to an unknown PC. How can this be achieved? In old days you could write-protect a floppy disk, this was a great feature. I fear that even if I connect the pendrive to a PC and ONLY read from it and not write anything, will it be safe for pendrive?

These utilities may only make a drive read only on the PC they are used on

To lock a drive permanently on any PC you can use Diskpart from a command line to set the drives attributes to read only.
