Number of slots for RAM

I want to upgrade the RAM on a friends computer. I checked the spec for his computer on crucial.com and it tells me it can take a maximum of 1GB. Is it the proper procedure to divide the 1GB over a matched pair of slots with two 512 MB modules or can it be done with one 1 GB module?

I am not saying that they will not replace the RAM without question, I use a lot of Crucial RAM in my build but I certainly would not by it from via their website as it is overpriced.

With older motherboards perhaps using the memory checker is simpler than removing a module and taking note of all numbers ETC.

But modern motherboards are far more forgiving when it comes to RAM compatibility and there is absolutely no need to use the memory checker
