using XP am unable to get the external USB webcam to work. It is recognised but is looking for some software or Driver. I have 2 cameras, both work on my main PC (windows7)by using any usb socket. I should really be grateful if someone could solve my problem.

Windows 7 likely includes drivers for many web cams, so the web cam is probably plug and play. However, XP, being a lot older, doesn't. You'll need to identify and download XP drivers for your web cam, I'd guess.
