When I go to turn off computer

I get the dialog box telling me to "click 'Turn off' to install important updates. Then it invariably goes on to install updates 1 t0 3 after which it goes on to shut down the computer. Are these the same 'updates' I am installing?

Method 1

Reset windows update components and then try to install the updates and see if the installation completes. Open the below link and click on the Fix it button.

If this does not help you try the next method.

Method 2

Try to download and install the updates manually. Visit the link and enter the KB number for the updates and download the same.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx

Try all the steps suggested from the below link.

Thank you for your efforts, Fruit Bat. It is all too complicated for me. I am going to have to get a man in!
