Google Earth doesn't like DirectX

Whenever I start up Google Earth (in OpenGL) I get the oppertunity to switch to DirectX, with the promise of a better GE experience. However, when I do try to run it in DirectX, the screen goes blank and when it returns, I get the error message: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" and the program refuses to respond any further.

Running DirectX diagnostics shows no problems. Any ideas?

I should have said that I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic 32.
