Configuring the COM port on a Windows 7 Virtual Machine

I am trying to configure the COM1 port on my Win 7 XP_Mode virtual machine. I have already access the physical COM1 port and set it up. I can access the Windows XP Mode - Windows Virtual PC Settings window and select COM1 there. (Left hand part of window). However, on the right hand part of the same window the option to select the Physical serial port is grayed out. Is this because my physical COM1 port is actually an RS232C connection made via a USB converter?

If so, can I use the 'Named Pipe' option and if so, what do I need to call the pipe to connect my external RS232C connection, made via a physical USB port to the Virtual Machine COM1?

If not, how do I make it work?

Suggestions gratefully received - thanks.
