Turn it off except when you want to use it.

Some useful tips here. Also I found that if you have any games or apps that auto update then switch auto update off on all of them. You can check for updates manually.

Not sure about andriod but on my iphone I find that if I turn off roaming and web data it helps with battery life and amount of data processed.

I turn off WiFi and Bluetooth until I need them. Saves a lot of battery power.
