Capacitive touch screen explanation please

Hi all, not a problem as such just like to know the reason. I have a tablet with a capacitive screen, using a finger or a conductive probe/stylus it works fine as it should. If I use a piece of wire or or any other conductor ie a coin, nothing happens. I don't intend poking it with wire or anything else but would like some one to explain please out of curiosity more than any other reason.

Any use, How Stuff Works. Not a definitive answer I admit but perhaps it has to do with the size of the conductor?

Chronos, thanks for the link. these screens are far more complex than I thought, clever stuff. Having played around with some other bits I am of the opinion that is something to do with the size of the contact area with the screen as you suggested. Too large is as bad as too small it seems.
