Latest windows updates fail to install

have xp sp3 dell desktop. I cannot install latest windows updates. hhave had this problem before, the updates download ok, but then get error saying updates failed to install. In the past when this occurs, as I try to shutdown pc, i get the message install updates or click here if you dont want them, so click update and they install ok. This time when I shutdown I am not getting the install updates option. Any help would be appreciated many thanks

1) Do a registry scan using one of the tools like 360 Amigo System Speed-up 2) Clear your HDD from clutter using CCleaner 3) Scan your HDD and RAM for bad/broken sectors, the most affective option would be to download and use the set of tools called "The Hirens Boot CD" 4) Install all the essentials like all the latest .NET Framework utility, Direct X, etc AND update all your hardware drivers to the latest builds.

Try these suggestions and come back here if you're still unhappy, good luck.

Hi Takeshi, done a complete clean of registry and check disk, updates now downloaded ok. have bookmarked the Hirens cd for later use, many thanks for your help
