I keep seeing posts on installing solid state drives to speed up the windows experience , but they are only small in capacity. Is it possible to install windows on a ssd and put programmes onto a normal hdd. would this work.

Yes that is the way to go about it.

even with old fashioned hard drives it was better to install the opsystem and progarms / data on separate drives / partitions to make things faster and make reinstalling easier.

Just to endorse what Fruit Bat /\0/\ said: putting your operating system and programs on an SSD and your data on a 'regular' drive is the classical install for SSDs. Of course, once the £/GB of SSDs falls, that may change.
