Google Chrome upgrade problem with personal preferences

I recently upgraded my copy of the Google Chrome web browser to the latest version. I now get a pop-up message saying: 'Your preferences cannot be read. Some features may be unavailable and changes to preferences won't be saved'.

What has caused this and how do I fix it?
