Win 8 And Lan and the internet

With my old laptop I could connect wirelessly to the net or connect wired up useing the yellow cable. Now wireless connection connection is great but I cant get a wired up connection Fairy new to all this so would be very grateful for any help. Thank you

Check in Device Manager under Network Adapters that you don't have any yellow triangle or exclamation marks and that you have an Ethernet network adapter installed.
