Network not functioning

Resolved

My Laptop was running so slowly that I decided to reinstall the Windows 7 Home Premium. All appeared correct until I tried to access my network between the Laptop and my Desktop which has the printer connected. Each time I attempt to view files or install the printer as a remote one attached to the Desktop I am informed "\DesktopPC is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified network provider name is invalid. " Nothing has changed on the Desktop PC, and the work-group name is the same on both machines. On the Network Map both machines are shown, however the desktop appears twice with 2 names. How can I over come these problems. I am at a complete loss, the last time I set the network up I had no problems at all. I am not aware that I need any passwords for the Laptop at present as I have not set any, and I am the only user so am the Administrator. I do of course have the two access codes for the network which I obtained from each machine. I can ping each machine.

You will need the password from your desktop for your laptop to access the network.

To find password on the desktop.

  1. Double click Network.
  2. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  3. Click HomeGroup.
  4. Click View or print the homegroup password.
  5. Write it down.

You will need to put this password into the laptop. Instructions here.

Thank you for your reply, Sorry but my Laptop advises that I am already connected to the home group. Can you advise me how to remove the info on the Laptop so I can start from scratch. The Laptop is not working as I would expect, but at this time I do not wish to re install the OS again!

Go back to number 3 and then click on Leave the homegroup. You can then set it up again using the password from the desktop.I always restart once I have changed settings. Post back.
