Mouse won't left-click and can't close dialogue boxes even with right-click

My mouse suddenly stopped registering left-clicks and I can't close dialogue boxes even with a right-click. I can do things with keyboard shortcuts (e.g. open start menu with Ctrl + Esc) and with the touchpad but the mouse only sometimes works and then only with a right click. How can I get the mouse working properly again please?

What mouse?
USB, PS/2, Bluetooth or wireless. What OS?

Try with a different mouse, that one might be faulty/broken or need new batteries.

Have you tried with a different mouse yet? They do wear out, I'm on my third :)
Or it might just be the lens underneath that is mucky and needs a wipe.
