Menu bar blacked out on Win XP

Sometimes wnen I load IE8 which defaults to Google home page the menu bar is blacked out. Rebooting my computer will sometimes fix it. Can some advise please.

Uninstall and reinstall IE8

Click start, control panel, administrative tools, services. That brings up the "Services" list. Scroll down to "themes", single click it. Click the "stop" option, double click "themes" which opens a new window. Change "automatic" to "manual". From here.

I hace carried out the rdave mod, it seems ok at the moment so will give it a day or so.
