Can this program be used safely? I have always been careful not to share my passwords with anyone. I am using Windows XP SP3

Have a look at Keepass. I have used this for some considerable time after a recommendation on this forum.

I have used Password Safe for several years now. I keep the data file it uses in Dropbox and can then access my passwords from it using my PC, Mac, iPad or Android phone.

Try Lastpass...your passwords are stored encrypted on their servers so you only have to remember one password to enable access to the rest of your passwords.
