I pinned a number of web sites using Firefox with latest updates. When I opened Firefox the next time there were nothing pinned. I may have used CCleaner before shutting down, could this have caused the problem?

I think Pinned Tabs are recognised as Temporary Files or similar by Ccleaner and as a result are removed when cleaning. As a result each time you clean the PC they will be removed. Whether you can overcome this by unchecking one of the other default options in Ccleaner I'm not certain, but it is looking to me as if you will need to Bookmark those pages you want Pinned and renew your pinning each time you run Ccleaner - after all the cleaning tool is designed to reduce clutter.
