Any ideas ? I have intermittent blocks of hazy red. Also outlines of red around script on my 4 year old HP laptop.

Is this a mechanical problem? Or something more sinister?

If you move the lid back and forth (slowly) does it alter the display? It sounds to me as if the connection 'twixt lid and base is worn/damaged. I think this can be repaired by fitting a new cable but you would have decide if cost was worth it.

Try a google for how to dismantle your laptop so that you can see how the cable connects.
