Copying files speeds between hard disk and flash drives.

I frequently quickly transfer digital images between my laptop and an external hard drive.
Having recently bought a 64Gb flash drive I attempted to transfer just 11Gb of digital images to that drive, which took over an hour. Is that to be expected that copying to flash drives is so slow?

It can take that long depending on the flash drive itself - make, quality, price you pay all comes into it - some are fast and some are slow.

OR if you have files larger than 4GB to copy then you could format your USB flash drive to NTFS - see here
You mentioned 11GB in total which is quite a bit - larger files copy quicker - it's the small files that take up the amount of time.
