I have a red mc afee warning box that appears on my desktop now, warning me that I am not protected and need to do a scan, however I suspect this is false and a virus as when I click on my normal mc afee icon and run a scan it is fine. I have also run my malware anti virus prog, nothing comes up. My internet explorer also keeps crashing, I don't know if that is linked.

Try running malwarebytes . if this does not help , try using Hitman Pro . You can download both for free

Can you describe the warning box in more detail please, or take a screenshot and put it on an image hosting site and post a link so we can see it, or see if you can spot it on the many pages of http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/page/6/ removal guides.

Has your paid version of McAfee run out or about to run out and this may just be a warning.
