How does Microsoft Skydrive work?

I've been using live mesh to synchronise my desktop & netbook, but M'soft is stopping Live Mesh in February, & I'll have to use Skydrive. I've "had a go", but the Skydrive files are always out of date. Aren't they supposed to update automatically?
