CD drive not playing audio

My wife's computer - Win XP - is in the hands of our local gurus who seem to be a bit flummoxed. If a software disc is put in the drive, it is recognised but an audio disc is not. The drive is fine - it says the device is working properly (no it's not!!). I wonder whether the great company of PCA gurus out there can beat our local guys to the solution.

Have you/they tried more than one audio disc?

Worth trying even if seen in My computer and saying working OK.

No CD/DVD or CD-ROM access is missing error Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41 Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in My Computer or Device Manager. (This is sometimes caused by the removal of Roxio or other writing software.)

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip Download XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip and save this file to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file to extract the contents. Locate the EXE file you extracted and double click it. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect. This utility is only intended for Windows® XP, but also appears to work for Vista and Windows 7. You may need Administrator level access to use this utility. If you do not have Administrator level access, the program will say it is finished, but will not have made any changes.

Similar fixes http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/ works for W7 Vista or XP http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip

or manual fix Run regedit and navigate to registry key HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Highlight it and in the right pane, find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values. Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them. Close regedit and restart the computer. If in doubt make a restore point before making changes.

Try this auto fix, click here then reboot.

If it is a DVD/CD player/ writer, it could be a damaged laser on the CD side. When you say it reads data is that off a CD or DVD? If it's only a CD drive then try the fix.

If it will read the disk in my copmuter but you cannot get sound from it then

in device manager right click the drive select properties - properties tab - make sure the slider is set to high and tick the Enable digital CD audio box - click OK

Fruit Bat /\0/\ - Local guys have tried the regedit route No joy. I have no access to computer so cannot try your fixes. When audio CD is in there is nothing in My Computer apart from the drive itself. SillBill - Tried 3 audios all of which work elsewhere so it is not the CDs. rdave 13 - it is CD & DVD writer. Reads data off CD (I think as this was local guy's trial)
