How to use Bullguard Backup

I am using Bullguard 12 Internet security. I examined the details of my backup and find it 86% full (5 GB). The image files are all .jpg.gz and I cannot open them. Other files are .FTW.gz and will not open. Just a few open files with the word processor. Q.1 Should I be able to open them? Q.2 In the event of a Hard drive failure, can they be downloaded to a new computer, and will they open? Glen
