Good evening to you all. I need some advice please. My sister wishes to start an evening course at college, and she's after a decent laptop @ a reasonable price preferably from amazon, play.com or Argos as her first choices. Ideally Windows 7(not 8, as not user friendly for her), ideally intel i5, loads hard memory, hard disk space, webcam, usb drives, hdmi, any other extra is a bonus, she'd like to purchase within next week - 2 weeks. please advice. she's a mature student by the way, and she's reasonable with pcs as she has a netbook

Don't think you'll get an i5 for under 400 pounds

Your wish is our command:
Acer i5 from Amazon £329.99 !!!!
Do read the reviews which are pretty glowing however I note the following MINOR drawbacks at this price:
It has USB 2.0 and not 3.0 which is the most recent standard. The glossy finish is a pain - speaking from experience and typing away on my 3 year old Vista Acer. It needs a polish every day! Several comments refer to the build quality as "Plasticky" and the sound quality from the speakers is poor. (Better using extenal ones or headphones)
Although it is Windows 8 there is a way to restore the more traditional start button and desktop using a third party add-in. I haven't tried it personally but it was recommended in the Telegraph Iobit StartMenu8
The Office Starter edition only includes advertising supported basic Word and Excel, no PowerPoint or Outlook, Easily sorted by using the free LibrOffice of course.
At this price however it is a stand out bargain and can't be all bad. I'm going to get one for one of my retired clients who is on a budget.

PS - I note from Fruit Bat /\0/\ 's link that the same site has this same model at £372.99 at the time of going to press! With a Lowest Price Promise - that might cost them!
