I want to use some fans from old PC's for another application. Would I need a transformer?

Yes. Most likely 12V but check on the fan.

All depends on the voltage and how you want to use the fans, and on what.
You could use batteries, transformer or other correct power supply?.

I want to use on a small plant growing setup to disperse the heat from grow lamps. Ideally on mains.
