My daughter is at uni, in uni accommodation, where they have wired internet in their rooms but no wi fi. Is there something she can use so that she can set up wi fi so internet can be accessed in the communal kitchen area?

I think she needs a Wireless Access Point and not a wireless Bridge.

Oops forget my above post that's to connect not wireless devices to a wireless network
All you need is a wireless router plugged into the ethernet connection.
