Is it possible to play any video files I have on my hard drive straight to the TV.If so what would I need ie leads, sockets etc.If I could do that it would save me having to transfer to my media player before playing on the TV

Yes you can. I have a HTPC connected to my TV via a HDMI cable and play my films via the PC that way.
As to what you need depends on the connections your TV has and if your PC has a spare port on the graphics card be it DVI HDMI VGA.

Chronos: does it not depend on what formats the TV supports? - eg MP4? I'm not sure you can expect to play any old video file straight off a hard drive onto your TV.

If you are using the TV as a Monitor you can play back anything.
