Dead Laptop Hard Drive Solution

Hi
Recently when starting up Laptop (Vista Home)it showerd the Blue Error Screen: UnmountableBootVolume.
I've changed the BIOS order and although the machine can mount the Installer CD, it still cannot detect an OS to run.
I'm going to attempt to retrieve the files on the Hard Drive via an IDE/USB adaptor but wondered if a replacement HD for the Laptop would solve this issue or if the main problem (machine not detecting Operating system via internal drive or CD installer disc) means the Laptop itself is faulty?
Thanks for any advice.
Maria

from the Vista DVD to command prompt
At the command prompt type in chkdsk /R C: where ‘C’ is your Windows partition. (Note: there is a single space between chkdsk and /R and another space after /R)
You will be asked if you want to check the hard drive the next time the computer starts – type in Y to confirm
Restart the computer – Windows will now check the hard drive and repair the damaged file system – this process may take several hours to complete.
If the above process fails to restore the system then repeat from the start but, this time, instead of step 1 above, type in the command bootrec /fixboot and then restart.
Hopefully this will have fixed the unmountable boot volume error and Windows should now start up normally

Massive thanks for taking the time to post your suggestions, luckily the first option worked a treat.
Thanks again!
