IE8 and IE9 Not reponding

I am running Windows 7 Professional and normally use Opera as my Browser. However occasionally I need IE to access certain web sites. I had been running IE9 but immediately after starting it stops responding (with that message). I took out IE9 via Control panel Update section and then activated IE8 through the same section of Control Panel. I am getting the same result: IE starts but before anything is shown on the page, I get the 'not responding' message. Despite starting and re-starting I get the same message every time. My firewall is not blocking this in any way - I am at my wits end trying to think what the cause is. Any help at all will be appreciated.

Hi Secret Squirrel - here's the event log copy from the last time I tried to get it running (a few minutes ago) is there anything in this that points to the problem/solution? The program iexplore.exe version 8.0.7601.17514 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel. Thanks TN but that event doesn't really tell us much.

Have another look in Windows Logs -> Applications then look in its "Source" column for an event called "Application Error" that mentions iexplore.exe as the faulting application name. Here's an example:

Frequently, the "Faulting Module Name" can reveal exactly what caused the problem.

How did you get on with testing IE in "Safe Mode with Networking"? Click the link if you don't know how.

Apologies in advance to Jock1e for undermining his advice, but your problem, that's specific to the IE browser, can't be caused by hardware device drivers.

Hi Secret-squirrel: Is this the info that you mentioned - you won't believe this but my head is spinning and as I'mm not 100% techically minded I keep going round in circles. I am now going to try Safe Mode with Networking - at least I know this one! Thanks again for your time and for everyone else who is trying to help

J tried Safe Mode with almost the same result - the programme hangs immediately on opening and nothing shows apart from the toolbars - however this time there 'not responding' didn't appear but as I left it for over 15 minutes it definitely did NOT respond!

Thanks for the latest test results. Sadly, again, the Event Viewer entry doesn't really tell us anything other than Internet Explorer stopped responding - which of course we know already. I was hoping for an "Application Error" event but I guess you don't have any so don't worry.

The fact that IE still misbehaves in Safe Mode is significant and it means that something's fundamentally wrong with the operating system files. For problems like that, rdave's suggestion (reply #5) of running SFC should be your next course of action.
