problem updating Windows.net framework

I run XP Pro on s desktop and every time I use windows update, it fails to load 2 updates to do with Windows .net framework. I have tried various fixes including registry clean up. I once tried to delete the .net framework software and re load it, but I lost all my sound drivers and hi res video drivers, so had to restore to old setting. My PC has version 2, 3, 3.5 and 4 loaded. Can anyone advise what the problem is and how to fix it - short of a complete re-install?

Repair tool did not work. Problen is with framework 2.0 SP2.
I will have to try reloading that version.
Can anyone tell me why I need 4 different versions of .net framework on my PC?
