hard drive crash

my pc just went black as i was using it.i called my hp support and after several tries they weren't able to restore it.they advised that the hard drive had probably crashed.my question is...would this be a mechanical or a software problem?i was able to buy new harddrive and install it and now my pc works fine.i would like to recover my data and pictures off my old hard drive, thank you

Try the old hard drive in a caddy first. If no joy, try recuva If the hard drive has had a mechanical failure, this is unlikely to help.
