Hi all,
A friend has asked me to take a look at his mums laptop as the screen keeps going 'funny'.
The laptop works fine for a few minutes then the screen starts getting lines and blocks all over it.
The only thing I can liken it to is in the Matrix film when all the data starts streaming down the screen.
Also the laptop decides to restart itself every now and again too.
I managed to do a virus and malware scan and both came up clean
I've taken 2 photos of the screen and put them on my Flickr account to show how the screen looks, link below.

Any ideas gratefully received,
Regards,
Chris.

Hi all,
I downloaded (from the Toshiba site) and installed the display / graphics drivers.
The laptop ran fine for around 30 to 40 minutes but then the same problem reappeared.
After having done a 'force' shut down and then restarted straight away it runs fine again for approx another 30 minutes before the same thing happens yet again.
Regards,
Chris.

Sounds as though the graphics chip is misbehaving when it gets hot. You could try checking for dust build up around the fan, but it can be concealed.

Hi,
I've checked for dust build up around the vents and fan and all seems clean.
I've also checked that the fan is working and it is.
Again it ran for about 30 to 40 minutes before the screen went 'strange' but the laptop did restart itself 3 times in the first few minutes after booting up.
Regards,
Chris.

Do you get any error messages on the restarts?

No error messages appear, the laptop just restarts itself and boots up straight to the desktop.

Autoreboot Disable 1. Click on the Start button and then on Control Panel. Tip: In a hurry? Type system in the search box after clicking Start. Choose System under the Control Panel heading in the list of results and then skip to Step 4. 2. Click on the System and Security link. Note: If you're viewing the Small icons or Large icons view of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply double-click on the System icon and proceed to Step 4. 3. Click on the System link. 4. In the task pane on the left, click the Advanced system settings link. 5. Locate the Startup and Recovery section near the bottom of the window and click on the Settings button. 6. In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart. 7. Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window. 8. Click OK in the System Properties window. 9. You can now close the System window. 10. From now on, when a problem causes a BSOD or another major error that halts the system, Windows 7 will not force a reboot. You'll have to reboot manually when an error appears.

I followed your instructions and then I ran the laptop over the weekend, around 10 hours in total and it ran like a dream, the screen never went 'funny' once.
My friend sent me a text today saying that he ran it yesterday for around 5 hours prior to giving it back to his mum and again it ran faultlessly.
I'll mark this as resolved.
Thanks for everyones help and suggestions.
Regards,
Chris.
