Problem with Windows update

An old office PC I am trying to get operative again, is using XP Pro SP3/ When I run Windows update, and select the 'Express' option the system stays at 'Checking latest updates for your computer' stage for some 10 minutes before finally telling me that there are numerous updates and inviting me to download them. On most PCs this stage normnally takes less than a minute. ANy ideas how I can fix this, please?

Maybe it is just a slow connection to the Internet.Have you tried rebooting and trying it again either that or it has not been updated for a long time.

finally telling me that there are numerous updates I would agree with Jock1e and his comments. If it has not been updated for some time that would be the reason.

Ok - looks like I just need to be patient.
Thanks both.
