Trust 240th Direct Webscan Gold scanner

OS Windows XP Home. Using Photoshop7 to import the scanner I find that after trying to initialize it I am told that the import command cannot be completed because of a problem with the acquisition mode interface. Both PS7 and the scanner software have been removed and then reinstalled but still it doesn't work. The scanner is several years old and production has ceased. The last driver update was I think in 2003. It worked on my previous computer with XP Home although the problem did occur fairly frequently but could be circumvented. The present machine is a Dell. I would be grateful to hear possible answers to the problem.
